SBA Offers Support to Veterans Who Defended Our Country

Greg Lyles, a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant, along with his son Chandler, who is also a former Airman, turned their passion for barbecue into a thriving business. Their venture, Lyles BBQ, generated over $1 million in sales just last year.

The concept for Lyles BBQ originated during their transition out of the military. Knowing they needed more knowledge and resources, they turned to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s veteran entrepreneurial training course, Boots to Business. This course taught them to manage budgets and cash flow, and now their business is booming.

Lyles BBQ is part of a larger community, with 2.5 million veteran-owned small businesses across the United States. As we honor veterans on Veterans Day, the SBA wants all veterans and military families to be aware of the resources available to support their entrepreneurial dreams after their military service.

Every year, over 200,000 veterans reach out to the SBA and its partners to start or grow their small businesses. The SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development assists veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, those transitioning out of service, and military spouses. They offer counseling, training, access to capital, and opportunities for government contracts. Veterans can also seek support from one of the 20 Veterans Business Outreach Centers located nationwide.

It’s well-documented that veterans make excellent entrepreneurs. Their military experience provides them with crucial leadership and management skills that are highly applicable in civilian careers. In fact, over a third of veteran business owners say they acquired directly relevant or transferable skills during their military service.

For many veterans, owning a business is a continuation of their mission to serve – first their country, and then their local community. As a nation, we continue to benefit significantly from their contributions. Veteran-owned small businesses generate $1.4 trillion in sales annually, highlighting their vital role in our economy and national identity.
