Five Essential Strategies for Rebounding After Hurricane Harvey

Five Essential Strategies for Rebounding After Hurricane Harvey

In the past week, as the Gulf Coast has grappled with the devastating impacts of Hurricane Harvey, we’ve witnessed moments of profound heartbreak and awe-inspiring heroism. Lives have been lost, homes and neighborhoods have been destroyed, but amidst the tragedy, first responders and ordinary people from Texas and Louisiana have shown extraordinary compassion and bravery to help each other survive. I’ve visited Texas twice recently to extend my thoughts and prayers to the Gulf community and to assure them of my commitment to help through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s resources. While FEMA addresses immediate needs such as food, water, and shelter, the SBA is here to support long-term recovery.

Experts predict that the rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Harvey will be among the longest and most expensive in U.S. history. For homeowners, renters, and business owners facing the daunting task of cleaning up and starting over, here are some crucial first steps to make your recovery process a bit easier:

1. Register for federal assistance with FEMA online at DisasterAssistance.gov or call FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). This will quickly connect you with various recovery resources, including housing assistance, grants, and SBA disaster loans.
2. Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible. The Insurance Information Institute provides tips on settling insurance claims after a disaster.
3. Visit SBA’s Hurricane Harvey page for information on applying for low-interest disaster loans available to homeowners, renters, businesses, and private nonprofit organizations.
4. The SBA is offering loan deferments on existing loans to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Check the policy notice for more details.
5. Be wary of scams. If someone offers to help with your SBA disaster loan application or other federal recovery assistance “for a small fee,” they’re likely running a scam. Federal assistance programs are free of charge. Always ask for identification and verify licenses and local references to protect yourself from fraudulent contractors.

The real work of recovery is just beginning. The SBA is dedicated to supporting the residents and businesses of the Gulf Coast for the long term. We are committed to restoring the local economy and building a strong foundation for future growth.
