Yes, Meta Tags are now used differently than in the olden days–wow, only about ten years ago. But, they are still important in a different way. Here are some suggestions to follow.
1) Straight from Google: “Optimizing on-page elements of Google’s pages, such as keywords, heading tags, and internal links can help search engines better understand the content of these pages and how they’re structured. Also, many of these optimizations aid users’ navigation and usability of the site.”
2) Each page on your Web site needs to have a clear and definitive page title that is contained in the title tags. If you do not have the title tag, then Google will use other text from this page. This may not be the best way to describe your site to your potential readers. Stick to about 60 characters in length at most.
<html>
<head>
<title>Title of the document</title>
</head>
3) You need to have a description on each page. This is very important for the search engines and your potential customers and clients. Only use about 155 characters maximum for each.
Make your description very strong. That is, use your key words, but don’t overload it. What do you want your readers to know about your Web site business?
Be honest. Tell it like it is. If you only sell shoes, do not say you sell shoes and socks just to get sock-crazy people to your online business.
Always remember your customer or client’s needs. That is who you want to come to your online business site. That is how you do online marketing.
Since you only have 155 characters, keep it short and sweet. Take out any extra words. Only say exactly what needs to be said with your keywords.
Give yourself a plug. If you offer the most children’s car seat options for sale online, then say it. It has to be true, however. If you are one of the biggest. Then say that.
Every page on your business e-commerce Web site needs a different description.
Use the same language in your HTML description that is on the page.
<meta content=”A description of the page” />
